Fraud Alert

We have received reports of scammers sending fake fraud-alert text messages and then calling members while spoofing East River Federal Credit Union’s phone number. This means your Caller ID may show East River’s phone number even though the call is not actually from us.

The fraudulent text messages we have seen have come from regular phone numbers rather than the short-code number typically used for legitimate fraud alerts. The scammers may reference transactions from these messages when they call, making the conversation appear legitimate.

They may also cause a legitimate verification code from another financial service to be sent to your phone and then tell you the code is needed to stop or reverse fraudulent activity.

Please remember:

  • East River FCU does not typically contact members after normal business hours regarding account activity. Be especially cautious of unexpected evening or after-hours calls.
  • Never trust Caller ID alone. Scammers can make a call appear to come from East River.
  • East River Federal Credit Union will never call you and ask you to provide a security code or one-time passcode that was sent to your phone. That code is designed to prove that you are accessing your account. If someone asks you to read it back to them, do not give it to them.
  • Never provide your online banking password, PIN, full debit card information, or other sensitive account credentials to someone who unexpectedly calls you.
  • If you receive a suspicious call claiming to be from East River, hang up and contact us directly using a phone number you know is legitimate.
  • If you suspect your debit card information has been compromised, you can temporarily turn your card off through East River’s online/mobile banking while you contact us.
  • If you have already provided card information or a verification code to someone you believe may have been a scammer, contact East River FCU as soon as possible.
