5 Things You Should Winterize Now

It's time to winterize

It’s fall which means winter is just around the corner. How fast time flies! You might be one of the few who have already checked off all of your winterization projects. But for the large majority of us who tend to put off that to-do list until the last possible day, here’s a friendly reminder of some priority items to complete, before time runs out:

Septic Tank
Have you had this maintenanced yet? Many companies who provide this service still have openings and are able to get this done for you. Call and schedule an appointment so you don’t have to deal with a mess when the temps drop.

Furnace
It’s probably been a while since you’ve had to use this. Turn it on and listen for any strange noises. Check to see that all of the vents in each room are open and warm air is coming through. If not, call an expert to check things out. If you use a propane tank, check the gauge to make sure it’s full and ready to go for winter.

Windows
Cold air can creep in from anywhere. Prevent higher heat bills by making sure your windows are well insulated. Your local hardware store has several different options available depending on how much you need to cover. Additionally, take advantage of sunny days during the winter season by opening the shades on windows that get the most sun exposure during the day.

Gutters
Most of the trees have lost their leaves, so now is a great time to clean those leaves out of your gutters. Gutters need to be kept clear of debris to prevent roof, wall and foundation damage.

Patio Furniture
Patio furniture is typically designed to withstand harsher weather conditions. But the less protected they are, the faster wear and tear will occur. Now is the time to move them into storage. If you don’t have a designated place to store them, invest in furniture covers and move fabric cushions indoors so that the stay dry.

While this list covers the basics, there could be several other items you need to winterize depending on your house and location. Consult with your contractor or seek advice from your local hardware store. If some of these projects come with an expensive price tag, our loan experts can work with you to get affordable funding that fits in your budget!
